Best Marshmallows for Smores, Ranked

The best marshmallows for s’mores should provide a puffy, squishy texture and a singularly sugary, mallowy taste. They should also melt easily and fit snugly in between two squares of graham cracker. We toasted 13 brands to bring you the best of the best.

The star of the s’more is unequivocally the marshmallow. I mean, graham crackers are great and a bar of plain chocolate is fine too, but a s’more truly wouldn’t be a s’more without a delicious toasted marshmallow. 

For this taste test, we tried all the marshmallows both plain and toasted (I borrowed a blowtorch from Mythical Kitchen). We wanted puffy, sugary marshmallows that melted well and brought great flavor. Plain marshmallows can only vary so much, but there’s a wide world of flavored marshmallows out there to explore. Some worked, and some didn’t. Of the 13 brands we tried, these top five got us most excited for camping trips and backyard bonfires.

Best of the Best

This is a rare case where a company has improved upon an already iconic product. Jet Puffed S’more Vanilla marshmallows are ethereal, square-shaped pillows with a lovely hint of vanilla flavor. The taste is great, and it’s a more sizable marshmallow than the Jet Puffed original. This is a thick chunk of mallow. The only knock against this product is that it might be a little too much marshmallow, depending on your preference. If you over-melt it, it will definitely ooze all over the place. There’s potential for it to be a mess, but there’s also potential to achieve the perfect s’more with these guys.

Best Classic

Hard to argue with a classic here; original Jet Puffed marshmallows are just so smooth and sweet. There’s something otherworldly about the softness of a Jet Puffed—they’ve got the aesthetic of a cloud eaten by Homer Simpson in a hunger dream. I also just love foods that have a consistent texture throughout. Fudgesicles and Jet Puffed marshmallows are similar in that regard. The size of these is just right, too. They’re not too big, so when you put one on a s’more, it won’t needlessly drip everywhere. I mean, look, we all have these in our cupboard for a reason. It’s a freaking Jet Puffed marshmallow, dude.

Best Chocolate

Staff writer Jordan Myrick and I recently gave these a 10/10 during a new product review taste test. The reason why they’re a nine now is that the candy coating in the middle doesn’t melt the whole way through like it should. I really think that this marshmallow might be a tad redundant on a s’more if you already have a square of chocolate on there, and the chocolate filling in these by itself isn’t substantial enough to replace a good Hershey’s chocolate bar square. Still, the flavor here is really incredible. The milk chocolate stuffed in the middle provides a nice contrast to the one-note sweetness of the marshmallow itself. Yo, I dipped these in coffee and they were great. Keep them around for snacking purposes. And go ahead and use them for s’mores, but just try to melt the marshmallow slowly so the chocolate interior gets melty, too.

Best All-In-One

These are essentially s’mores unto themselves. The marshmallows’ exteriors are coated with graham crackers, and inside they have the same milk chocolate as the Stuffed Puffs Classic Milk Chocolate Marshmallows. Once you heat these, they have all the same flavors as s’mores, but what they don’t have is the same diverse texture. S’mores are great because you get the solid crunch of the graham cracker, and the meltiness of the chocolate and marshmallow. These don’t quite provide that experience, but they’re still quite good. Toast these and sandwich them with some graham crackers and chocolate if you want to go double s’mores.

Best Vegan

For vegan marshmallows, these are damn good. They are just a tad firmer than regular marshmallows, but in my opinion, the difference is negligible. They have a stronger, almost powdered sugar taste. Still, I am quite impressed that these are vegan. They’re made with tapioca syrup, tapioca starch, cane sugar, soy, vanilla flavoring, and carrageenan (an emulsifier that comes from red seaweed). I love when vegan food tastes great and feels incidentally plant-based. There’s no missing the animal-based gelatin used in regular marshmallows. Science wins here. Good job, Dandies.
